A box gutter behind a parapet does not behave like an eaves gutter. When an eaves gutter overflows, the water spills over the front edge onto the ground. A box gutter has a wall on both sides, so when it backs up the water rises instead — over the roof sheet and into the building. Leaves banked along the join between sheet and box are what starts that.

The full 30 metres was cleared of leaf litter and the sludge underneath it, then the outlet was flushed. On a box gutter the outlet is worth checking on its own: the channel can look clear while the discharge point still holds enough debris to slow everything down, and on this kind of roof there is no visible warning until water is already inside.
