Valley Gutter Cleaning — Narawong Road, Caulfield

Roof valleys on Narawong Road, Caulfield, packed solid with leaves after several years without a clean. A tree overhangs the roof and everything it drops had collected in the same two channels. Valleys are the part of a roof nobody sees. They take runoff from two slopes at once, and when they block, the water has nowhere to go but under the tiles.

The problem

A blocked valley does not behave like a blocked gutter. An eaves gutter overflows off the front edge and the water lands in the garden. A valley sits between two roof planes, so when it fills, water backs up sideways under the tiles and into the roof space — and nothing shows from the ground until it reaches a ceiling.

What we did

Both valleys were cleared end to end, working from the edges in so nothing was pushed further toward the outlet. Years of compacted litter had to be broken up before it would lift. The tiles either side were checked as the debris came out, because that is where movement shows if a valley has carried weight for years.

  • Both roof valleys cleared end to end
  • Compacted litter broken up before removal
  • Debris worked toward the edges, not down the valley
  • Tiles either side of each valley checked
  • Flow through the valleys confirmed
  • Before and after photographs supplied

Result

  • Valleys running clear for the first time in years
  • Water path under the tiles closed off
  • Dry litter removed from against the roof structure
  • No displaced or cracked tiles along the valley lines
